What is a root canal?
- A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed to alleviate tooth pain and save the tooth from being extracted. Well over 14 million procedures are performed every year.
- This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges.
- At the center of your tooth is the pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that serves to form the tooth’s root.
- Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures.
- Root canal treatment involves removing the diseased pulp from the root canal which is then thoroughly cleaned/shaped and sealed. The actual roots themselves are left intact and not removed at all. If the roots were removed, you would no longer have the tooth.
- Success rates for root canal treatment occurs in 90-95% of cases. Most treatment can be completed in one visit but occasionally two visits may be needed depending on the complexity of the case.

What happens after treatment?
When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.
How much will it cost?
The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an implant or a bridge.

Who hears "root canal" and gets excited?! I was terrified going into this appointment not knowing what was going to happen and what I was going to feel during the procedure. The minute the technician took me back I calmed down, she was very nice and talked me through everything that was going to happen. When Dr Patel came in he explained more in depth about the procedure and explained my CT and xray to me. The procedure went very quickly and I had no pain whatsoever! Dr Patel called to check on me that evening, which I thought was wonderful, and answered any questions I had post procedure. I ended up having to do a 2 part root canal due to the infection I had and was not worried at all about my second appointment. I am not scared at all about having to have another and have told all of my friends that it was not bad at all! If you ever have tooth pain make the Endodontist your first stop, it could save you a lot of time, money, and your tooth! Thank you so much for saving my tooth 🙂

If you have to have a root canal or any other type of work Dr. Patel is your man. He and his staff are over the top. Professional, friendly, helpful, caring. I'm a wimp when it comes to dental work. But, Dr. Patel and staff eased my anxiety. They told me what they were doing, how much longer, made sure I was comfortable. He and his assistant work so smoothly together. No more pain for me. I was nervous about my root canal as it was the first time I've had one. I was also skeptical about the 3D scan however it truly helped Dr Patel locate my canal and treat it effectively. Regular x-rays did not show there was any canal left which potentially required an implant. The 3D scan Dr Patel did located a residual canal and he was able to restore my tooth rather than the expensive alternative. Staff was beyond helpful and returned calls promptly. I also never waited past my appointment time. Dr Patel was professional, kind, and explained the procedure clearly which put my mind at ease.
